How to check a domestic helper's references

A reference from a previous family is the best guide to how a helper will work in your home, but only if it is genuine and you ask the right questions.

Updated 29 October 2026

1. Ask for the right references

Ask for at least two references from families the helper worked for in the last few years, ideally in the UAE. A friend or relative is not a reference. Ask for the employer's name, phone number, the dates worked and what the job involved.

2. Make sure the referee is real

Call the number yourself rather than accepting a message or a screenshot. Check that the dates, area and family details match what the helper told you. A real employer will usually remember small details easily: the children's names, the home, the routine.

3. Questions to ask the previous employer

  • How long did she work for you, and what were her main duties?
  • Why did she leave?
  • How was she with your children (or elderly relative)?
  • Was she honest and reliable with time, money and belongings?
  • How did she handle a difficult moment or a mistake?
  • Would you employ her again?

4. Listen for what is not said

Short, vague answers or a long pause after "would you employ her again?" can tell you more than praise. Ask a follow-up question rather than filling the silence.

5. Or let us do the calling

Helpers with the Reference Checked badge on Wholesome Helpers have had their previous UAE employers contacted and confirmed by our team. Members can read what those employers said before making a single call.

Common questions

What if a helper has no UAE references?

Many helpers new to the UAE do not. Look for in-person screening, training and references from their home country, and plan a careful trial.
